WAKURIYA is comprised of two words: one from “WA” that means “Japanese”, “harmony”, and “gentle” in Japanese; another from “KURIYA” that means “kitchen” used in ancient Japan. We combine these two words to form WAKURIYA as our restaurant name with strong passion to present a new style of Japanese cuisine: one that maintains its deep roots in authentic Japanese culture and tradition, yet breathes new life into a deliciously innovative cuisine. It is our hope that you will enjoy our Japanese cuisine with carefully selected sake and wine at WAKURIYA. Our dinner consists of pre-fixed course with nine dishes. We use the best ingredients, including fresh sea food, poultry, meat, and seasonal vegetables, which may vary occasionally depending on market. WAKURIYA has a long and open kitchen counter with grills and ovens. You will enjoy and appreciate Chef Katsuhiro’s culinary skills, such as, cutting sashimi, decorating sakizuke, freshly preparing Japanese desserts, and among others. Katsuhiro Yamasaki, Executive Chef & Owner His root comes from two parts, one from a cozy sushi restaurant that his parents ran in Wakayama and another from Kitcho, one of the highest Kaiseki restaurant in Kyoto, Japan where he began his chef career. He learned the most fundamentals of the perfection of Japanese cuisine from these two different styles of restaurants. After 13 years of extensive experience as a chef in Japan, he came to the Bay Area with his wife, Mayumi, and started to work at a busy sushi restaurant, former Toshi’s Sushiya, that was later changed to a Japanese Kaiseki restaurant, Kaygetsu, in Menlo Park. He has been creating "Contemporary Japanese cuisine" since April 2008 at Wakuriya.
