Located in the heart of San Francisco's Mission District, Commonwealth is a progressive American restaurant. Chef Jason Fox takes a decidedly global approach to California's tradition of showcasing local, seasonal foods by incorporating diverse culinary ingredients and techniques. Commonwealth also donates $10 from each of Chef Fox’s tasting menus ($75) to local non-profits. Food – Commonwealth’s goal is to offer one of the best dining experiences in the Bay Area. Executive Chef Jason Fox’s Progressive American cuisine harmoniously combines flavor palettes from around the world, and a broad range of techniques to create food that is refined, distinctive and satisfying. Fox creates harmonious, layered dishes rather than focusing on any single ingredient or mode of preparation. Wine – The beverage program consists of a terroir driven wine list that is tailored to the menu and characterized by higher acid, and restrained fruit. Commonwealth also offers a small selection of craft beer and a nightly cocktail made with liquid nitrogen. Ambiance – Commonwealth is a welcoming and sophisticated space that features hickory, glass, and ambient light in simple yet dynamic combinations. Our goal is to offer the highest standard of service possible, while still maintaining a friendly and convivial atmosphere. Overall, we hope to create an approachable fine-dining experience. Commonwealth’s prices compare favorably with restaurants of the same caliber so that diners may enjoy a broad range of experiences within a single meal. Commonwealth aspires to be a sophisticated neighborhood restaurant, not a hushed temple of haute cuisine. Community – Commonwealth is named after the early modern concept of organizing for the common good. Ten dollars from the sale of each tasting menu is donated to local charities—a way to indulge conscientiously. We are proud to give back to the community, and also hope to inspire other businesses to adopt a charitable model. Jason Fox is the Executive Chef and a co-owner of Commonwealth. He was previously the Executive Chef of the highly acclaimed Bar Tartine, and Chef de Cuisine of Scott Howard Restaurant. Fox’s holistic approach to cuisine utilizes both modern and traditional techniques and draws influences from Europe, Africa and Asia. His cooking strikes a balance between showcasing and enhancing ingredients, creating harmonious combinations of bold flavors and textures. Ian Muntzert is the Chef de Cuisine and a co-owner of Commonwealth. His breadth of experience includes many of San Francisco’s iconic restaurants including Coi, Nopa, Zuni Café, Pizzeria Delfina and Bar Tartine. A third-generation chef, at Commonwealth Ian furthers the Muntzert family traditions of cooking, baking and science. Xelina Leyba is the General Manager and a co-owner of Commonwealth. She was previously the General Manager at Bar Tartine and believes in providing the highest standard of service, while maintaining a convivial and comfortable atmosphere. Her management style inspires strong loyalty among the staff: she’s worked with several of our servers for years. Anthony Myint is a co-owner of Commonwealth whose responsibilities include production, publicity, and charitable coordination. He’s a co-founder of Mission Street Food—a popular twice-weekly occasional restaurant that helped create Commonwealth’s charitable agenda and public financing model. Myint is also the co-founder of Mission Burger and Mission Chinese Food.
